Karlstejn Castle
This high gothic castle was founded in 1348 by Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV as a place for safekeeping of the royal treasures, especially Charles's collection of holy relics and the coronation jewels of the Roman Empire. At the outbreak of the Husite wars the castle became the place for safekeeping of the Czech coronation jewels, which were kept here, with the exception of several short time breaks, for nearly 200 years. The castle was reconstructed in late gothic style after 1480 and in renaissance style in the last quarter of the 16th century. The present appearance of the castle comes from the last reconstruction, which was carried out, in the purist neo-gothic style by architect Josef Mocker at the end of the 19th century. I will pick you up at your hotel or accommodation and then we drive south-west to the little town of Karlstejn. Karlstejn Castle situated, as castles usually are, on a hill for protection. On arrival there, you have a choice to either board a horse drawn carriage (about EUR 6 per person one way) or we can walk up to the castle (about a 20-30 minute walk). Once there, we take a tour through this fairytale-like castle, conjuring up our dreams of princes and princesses, dungeons and dragons.

Moravian Caves
The Czech Republic and it’s state of Moravia has one of the most beautiful karst regions in the world. The area north of Brno, the capital of Moravia, is studded with caves full of impressive stalactites and stalagmites – dripstones carved out by rivers and time into the subterranean limestone. These limestone sediments date back to some 350 million years ago – give or take a day. :-) The most visited caves are situated along the mostly subterranean Punkva river and Sloup creek. These caves have been discovered only in the beginning of the 20th century! After I pick you up at your hotel or accommodation, we drive east to Moravia – one of the 3 states of the Czech Republic (Bohemia and Silesia are the others). After about a 2-3 hour drive from Prague, depending on traffic, we arrive in the Karst region full of incredible caves, made by nature and fairly recently made easily accessible to all but the handicapped. We visit as many caves as possible with priority being the Punkva Cave with it’s Macocha (stepmother abyss), Sloup and Sosov Caves and the Katherine Cave. The Macocha abyss is 138.5 meters / 415.5 feet deep! Your guided walking tour through the caves shows you these awesome formations. At the Punkva cave, you also take a boat ride into the cave as well as a cable car ride to the top of the area. The Sloup Cave is another gem not to be missed. The Sosov Cave is especially interesting since it was not discovered until after the area became a natural preserve, so the dripstone robbers could not do any harm here. These caves are well preserved to show you what nature created over the millenniums. Balcarka Cave will also be visited, should time allow.
