We spend the day exploring Addis Ababa beginning with a visit to the National Museum, one of the most important sub- Saharan museums in all of Africa. The museum is home to the fossilized humanoid Lucy, as well as an amazing collection of art facts, royal items and art. We then visit the Ethnological Museum, which was the former palace of Haile Selassie. After lunch, we take time in St. George Cathedral, built in 1896 by Emperor Menelik and then continue on to Holy Trinity Cathedral. Holy Trinity Cathedral is the largest Orthodox Church in Ethiopia and has survived through many historical periods, as its interesting architecture can attest to. The Cathedral contains the thrones and the tombs of the emperor and some of the royal family. BRONZE DANKILL FOR 9 DAYS DAY 01. Take the morning flight to Mekele where our vehicles will collect and drive you down to the Danakil depression. This is the 3rd lowest place on Earth 120m below sea level. Arrive in Amedela and continue driving to Assale where the Afar and Tigre people extract salt to transport it to the highlands with thousands of caravan of Camels. ON Camp Day 02-03 . Drive to Dalol. Dalol is definitely one of the most amazing places that one can ever see in the world. Since this is geologically one of the very active areas, underground earth minerals are pushed out due to high pressure and get crystallized in contact with atmospheric Oxygen forming mineral hills of different shapes and colors. Around Dalol are also found shooting spring waters and geysers. ON Camping Day 04-05. Drive to Erta Ale via Gusruad which in local languages means “Smoking Mountain” named after the smoke which comes out from the volcano. It takes 3 ½ hours to trek up to the top of the mount where one can observe clearly the crater pit filled with Lava Lake. This is one of the only 2 volcanoes with a permanent lava lake. Day 06. Visit Afdera which is the name of a salty water lake found in the town named after the lake. Here salt is extracted in a more systematic way. The water is pumped in to ponds where it is left to evaporate under the baking Sun of Afdera. When the water has all evaporated, salt remains. Camp on the shore of the lake Day 07. Today we shall drive again on asphalted road for 260km. Arrive in Logya and overnight in a simple local hotel. Day 08. This is the most important road of Ethiopia connecting Addis with the port of Djibouti. Arrive in Awash and overnight at Awash Falls lodge inside the park. The lodge is located just in front of the Awash Waterfalls Day 09. Explore the Awash park in the morning and drive to Addis
