Journey to the walled city of Harar
Introduction Dire Dawa which is part of the railway line stretching from Addis Ababa to Djibouti, it was built at the beginning of the 20th century with the co-operation of the French government. The market in Kefira is very interesting, providing an opportunity to mingle with peoples of the region: the Afar, Somali and Oromo. Located 50km from Dire Dawa and at a height of 1,870m above sea level is the city of Harar. Founded in 1500, the city was once a Muslim fortress and one of the most dynamic markets in east Africa. Harar is one of the most impressive Ethiopia’s historic destinations pulls remoteness and ancient history as part of the long and colourful existence of the country Ethiopia. Today, Harar, next to Mecca Medina, is one of the main Muslim pilgrim sites in the world. Harar’s most determined attraction, the old and walled town of Harar, was particularly established in 1540’s following the downfall of the Imams’ rule. In Harar there are 87 mosques and various sanctuaries within the old city walls. The poet Rimbaud spent some of his last years here and made it the headquarters for his arms dealing, which involved trading in arms destined for the emperor Menelik. After lunch, we take time in St. George Cathedral, built in 1896 by Emperor Menelik and then continue on to Holy Trinity Cathedral. Holy Trinity Cathedral is the largest Orthodox Church in Ethiopia and has survived through many historical periods, as its interesting architecture can attest to. The Cathedral contains the thrones and the tombs of the emperor and some of the royal family. After short break at Weyto proceed to Key Afer, you will be able to join in the local weekly Banna and Tsamay market, same a very colourful market that attracts neighboring tribes in the region - the Aris from Jinka, the Tsamay from Weyto and the Hamars from Dimeka areaand are known for their local made showy decorative dressings and bunting hair style as well as dye striped bodies. Attending to this market will allow you to compare the dressing patterns, ornamentation techniques etc. of the various tribes in the area. Afternoon, you will be proceeding to Jinka. Friday We drive further south to visit the Mursi Village in Mago Park, and may spot wild games such as Gerenuk, Oribi, Kudu, Hartebeest, Water-buck and many bird species (180 species have been recorded in this Park so far). The Mursi tribe whose women wear circular clay plate on their lower lip as well ear lobes the men are known for the fierce stick fighting. Dimeka Saturday Market Today we drive through the fascinating uninterrupted lifestyle of Banna and Hamar communities. Dallol and Erta Alle Volcano
BRONZE DANKILL FOR 9 DAYS DAY 01. Take the morning flight to Mekele where our vehicles will collect and drive you down to the Danakil depression. This is the 3rd lowest place on Earth 120m below sea level. Arrive in Amedela and continue driving to Assale where the Afar and Tigre people extract salt to transport it to the highlands with thousands of caravan of Camels. ON Camp Day 02-03 . Drive to Dalol. Dalol is definitely one of the most amazing places that one can ever see in the world. Since this is geologically one of the very active areas, underground earth minerals are pushed out due to high pressure and get crystallized in contact with atmospheric Oxygen forming mineral hills of different shapes and colors. Around Dalol are also found shooting spring waters and geysers. ON Camping Day 04-05. Drive to Erta Ale via Gusruad which in local languages means “Smoking Mountain” named after the smoke which comes out from the volcano. It takes 3 ½ hours to trek up to the top of the mount where one can observe clearly the crater pit filled with Lava Lake. This is one of the only 2 volcanoes with a permanent lava lake. Day 06. Visit Afdera which is the name of a salty water lake found in the town named after the lake. Here salt is extracted in a more systematic way. The water is pumped in to ponds where it is left to evaporate under the baking Sun of Afdera. When the water has all evaporated, salt remains. Camp on the shore of the lake Day 07. Today we shall drive again on asphalted road for 260km. Arrive in Logya and overnight in a simple local hotel. Day 08. This is the most important road of Ethiopia connecting Addis with the port of Djibouti. Arrive in Awash and overnight at Awash Falls lodge inside the park. The lodge is located just in front of the Awash Waterfalls Day 09. Explore the Awash park in the morning and drive to Addis
