In my opinion the most beautiful neighborhood in the world, but I live there and was born and raised in Amsterdam, so forgive me being a bit biased. Some say that the Jordaan was the very first example of government city planning in the world. An elaborate plan that was published in 1612 was responsible for the coming to existence of this very picturesque neighborhood. The Jordaan was meant to be for the working class, who lived there for more than 300 years, until the 1960s and 1970s, when bigger housing in the outskirts of Amsterdam became available. Since the 1960’s and 1970’s, many small businesses as woodwork shops, carpenter stores, hardware stores, grocery shops, clothing stores, tailors and what have we, did not survive due to the competition by giant hardware stores, shopping malls and most of all the supermarkets.
